Honour Award 2022

The Board of Trustees of London Islamic Cultural Society are extremely happy to share some inspiring news.

Her Majesty The Queen has awarded the honour of MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours List to our Sister President, Bibi Rabbiyah Khan. Alhamdu lillah.

This is an amazing recognition of the contribution that our Mosque & Cultural Centre has made to the local community – particularly over the last few years as we all strive to support each other through the pandemic.

Sister Bibi, supported by an exceptional team of Trustees and LICS Helpers continues the legacy of our late President Brother Abdool Alli, and our late Uncles, Aunties who were integral in establishing LICS as we know it, alongside current LICS supporters. Together we have built and established our unique, purposeful Mosque/Cultural Centre that reaches out to our community and beyond.

Previously as Secretary and now as President of LICS, Sister Bibi has built strong connections with other organisations in Haringey and the surrounding areas. She has been an active representative for our organisation in public/civil life. She has organised charitable activities and delivered voluntary services to the community for the past forty years.

In celebrating and recognising Sister Bibi’s tireless work and initiative as a leader, the award also honours our diverse and resilient community. This honour recognises all our hard work – and signals the vital role LICS plays in the lives of so many.

The work of our Mosque/Cultural Centre is for all – brothers, sisters and our neighbours. We pride ourselves on the work we do with the Police, NHS, Faith Groups and so many others to improve the lives of everyone. The work that we do in engaging with others and raising the profile of our religion and community is another way in which we demonstrate our faith.

Recipients of this honour are and will continue to be a role model in the community. We are confident that Sister Bibi will exceed expectations in fulfilling this role and continuing to strive for inclusion and equality for all.

We extend warm and heartfelt congratulations to our dear sister on this outstanding honour.

May Allah strengthen and grow LICS under Sister Bibi’s leadership.

Bibi Khan, president London Islamic Cultural Society (Wightman Road Mosque), has been made an MBE for services to local government and community cohesion

The 68-year-old is the mosque's first female president, having taken over when her father Abdool Alli died three years ago, and she told the Ham&High she still meets resistance from some quarters.

"They're stuck in a sort of limbo of where women are not supposed to be doing this," she said.

But she said the centre has continued her father's work: "Everything has been done in the same way he would have done it. He set some goalposts, some principles, we will follow it – but what we do now is we do it better."

Since the arrival of Covid, the mosque has provided support for families, collected food for NHS workers, and tackled head on myths about the vaccines, hosting a pop-up clinic in March. Projects are under way to raise awareness about the rise in gambling addiction and about climate change.
